I have AIDS I have had AIDS for almost 3 decades. I have buried my friends and when I was diagnosed, as I kept on living, I buried my healthy self. So when I get sick nowadays, when things happen to me, I am not covered in paranoia. I’ve lived through it. I’ve seen it. I remember the images of my friends writhing in skeletal vessels that used to be filled with a life force and a light that was almost blinding. I remember feeding them and washing them and cleaning up there waste and writing letters to their parents because they had been left for dead. And that goes through my mind every time I’m ill. I’m coming out of a couple of days of a fog. I’m not sure what happened. But I am no longer frightened. I am determined. I am angry. I am present and I am grateful. I don’t know that I can tell you I’m grateful for my HIV. I don’t think I’m that enlightened, to be honest, but I am grateful that I have angels in my life that help me move through a sickness and that is really it, isn’t it? To know that I am seen and loved and held in this way is everything. So coming through the fog I am lifted by the light. And I will never forget that. Or those humans who gave their lives in order for this to be true.
